VRGP Mental Health
For many people living in rural and remote communities, general practice is often the first—and sometimes only—point of access for mental health care. GPs therefore play a crucial role in delivering mental health services, managing a wide range of acute and chronic conditions through diagnosis, treatment, and ongoing care. With mental health conditions contributing to more than 70% of general practice presentations, the demand for clinicians with advanced skills is significant, particularly in areas where access to specialists such as psychiatrists, psychologists, and psychiatric nurses is limited. These access challenges mean that rural GPs frequently serve as the front-line providers of mental health care, highlighting the growing need for timely, high-quality services delivered close to home.
